Lisa DeWolfe, RD CDE

Lisa graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University in 1990 & graduated from Internship at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax, in 1991.  She worked full time for the first 10 years of her career, but is now working part time at St Anne Community and Nursing Care Centre, specializing in Diabetes Education.  Lisa also provides nutritional support to the 24 residents of the Long Term Care facility.  She has been a certified diabetes educator since 1997 and has been certified in insulin dose adjustment since 2010.   One passion of Lisa's is public speaking and she has presented nutrition information at numerous events throughout her career.

Michele is a graduate of StFX and completed her internship at the General Hospital in St.John’s.  She has had the pleasure of working in long term care for 26 years and has been a preceptor for dietetic interns for the past 17 years.

Ashley is the in-store dietitian for Atlantic Superstore in Sydney, Glace Bay and North Sydney. Originally from Sydney, Ashley graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition, and went on to complete an Integrated Dietetic Internship. 

As a retail dietitian, Ashley works with all members of the community, offering a variety of individual and group services including grocery store tours, nutrition consultations, educational workshops and food demonstrations.

Debbie Madore, RD

Debbie graduated from Mount St Vincent University and has worked in many areas of health including acute care, community and long term care. She has always worked in consulting. At this time, Debbie has been working with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board (CB-VRSB) as the Nutrition for Learning Dietitian since 1999. In this capacity Debbie manages all aspects of nutrition programming for all schools in the CB-VRSB. She coordinates the ordering of food and supplies along with volunteer management functions at the program level; and develops and manages key partnerships, budgets, and fundraising initiatives at the board level.

 

Debbie was an active participant on the provincial task force that developed the Food and Nutrition Policy for Nova Scotia Public Schools and continues her work today as part of the policy advisory group tasked with revision. She continues to work towards increasing capacity for policy by providing supports and resources for healthy food in the school setting. She is currently the treasurer for Nourish Nova Scotia and continues to play an integral role in advocating for school breakfast and child nutrition programs

Natasha Osmond, RD

A real food lover, Natasha graduated with a degree in Human Nutrition from St. Francis Xavier in 2010; then completed an internship with the QEII Health Sciences Centre.  Since that time, she has worked in her hometown as a clinical inpatient dietitian with medical units, mental health units, and long term care.  More recently, Natasha worked with a major grocery retailer as an in-store dietitian. 

Natasha has found her passion in promoting healthy lifestyles, feeling good in your skin, and eating down-right good food.  She currently works as a Primary Health Care Dietitian with the Nova Scotia Health Authority in Cape Breton.  Her job roles surround individual counseling sessions, group based nutrition workshops, development of community nutrition initiatives, and working collaboratively with allied health professionals to promote wellbeing. Shirley Peters, PDt

Avery graduated from StFX with BScHNU in the spring of 2017, completing his internship experience through StFX and training in different locations throughout Nova Scotia. He has significant experience working in the food service and retail environments. While he had always wanted to work clinically with dietetics, Avery has realized that working with food hands-on is where he is the happiest.

Now Avery works as a Registered Dietitian for Sobeys in the Cape Breton area, serving Sydney and the surrounding CBRM areas. Originally from the area, Avery is happy to be back home and contributing to the well-being and enhancement of his community and its members.

Claire Turpin, BSc PDt

Program Manager, New Dawn Meals on Wheels

Claire is a registered dietitian who is currently developing nutrition programming to administer through the Better Bite Community Food Centre at the New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation in Sydney, Cape Breton. She also manages the New Dawn Meals on Wheels program and Community Kitchen at the centre. The nutrition program at New Dawn focuses on providing fresh, locally sourced vegetables, fruits, and meats.

Claire is originally from Newfoundland. She holds a degree in Applied Human Nutrition from Mount Saint Vincent University. She has been working with New Dawn for the past several year and was hired directly after finishing her dietetic internship. 

She enjoys hula hooping, traveling, and exploring new new places and new foods. She loves what Cape Breton has to offer and has enjoyed making this her new home.

After completing a Science Degree in Chemistry and Biology from Saint Mary’s University, Jessica pursued an Applied Human Nutrition Degree in Dietetics at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax and started practicing as a Dietitian in 2017. She started a private practice, counseling clients and delivering information via e-counseling. This medium
of counseling enables clients to receive information from a location convenient for them. Although she has a wide spectrum of education in nutrition, Jessica's focus is weight management and overall healthy eating. Jessica’s practice is client centered which enables her to deliver a counseling style and meal planning that is best suited for her clients.

 

Jessica is also a volunteer member for the continuing competency program (CCP) committee at the Nova Scotia Dietetic Association (NSDA) and an active member of NS Dietitians for Health Insurance Coverage (NSDHIC).

Jennifer Garus, PDt

Jennifer is the executive manager of the Nova Scotia Dietetic Association (NSDA), the provincial dietetic regulatory body. She has been in this role since 2007 and her role involves: competency development, legislative change, board governance, organizational management, project management, and the core functions associated with professional regulation. Prior to this, she practiced as a clinical and community dietitian in several provinces in a variety of practice settings, which included an outpatient department and small hospital, long-term care facilities, industry, home care, private practice, public health, and telehealth. Her past dietetic experience has been especially relevant to the development of practice standards, competencies, and most recently, NSDA’s jurisprudence e-learning module. Jennifer is currently completing her Masters of Science in Applied Human Nutrition program at MSVU. Her thesis relates to professional ethics and she draws on her experiences in the writing of an autoethnography.

I have practiced dietetics for over 14 years and I have worked in various roles and places.
I worked with Loblaw's as a Grocery Store Dietitian for 5 years. I worked with the IWK Health Center on the Rehab and Brain Injury Response Teams. I have experience with Ketogenic diets and pediatric clinical nutrition. Currently I support the Provincial Hospitals' Food and Nutrition Services. Over 18 facilities use Vision Software to manage the departments, including inventory management, patient food service and clinical nutrition support. I have been in this role for 6 years; I love the challenge of implementing technology to support food and nutrition services and I enjoy working with fellow dietitians and managing projects.

I have been a dietitian since 1996 and have enjoyed working in Clinical Pediatrics, Public Health, Primary Health Care and Academia. In my current position as the Dieitians of Canada, Regional Executive Director for the Atlantic Provinces, I have the opportunity to work with dietitians from across the 4 Atlantic Provinces to promote our profession and advocate for advancing health through food and nutrition. I love having the opportunity to see the diversity of roles that professional dietitians are in and the dedication and passion they have for the profession.  I completed a BSc at St FX, a dietetic internship at the Toronto Hospital and a MSc at Mount Saint Vincent University.
