Jumpstart Your Health: 3 Steps Toward the Path to a Better You!

 by Kelly Whalen

“What do we know about change? Change is possible… Lasting change is best… Change is a challenge… Change is possible.” –Dr. Michael Vallis

This quote says a quite a lot about change, and will be the center of focus for this month1.

Picture this - it’s a few minutes after midnight on New Year’s Eve,  you’ve closed your eyes tight and are thinking to yourself: This is it. This is a fresh start for me. When you closed your eyes did you think of how in 2014 you’re going to shed those few extra pounds, eat better, or exercise more? If you did, you’re not alone. It is estimated that just over half of Canadians admitted to making New Year’s resolutions to better themselves last year2. Would you believe that of those hope- filled, well-meaning Canadians, only half of them continued their ambitions past one month.

How to Find Your Own Path - Step Forward in Goal Setting!

Previously, we discussed three important steps to help achieve change2. This week we’ll be discussing how to start on your personal path. If you were to ask Peter Pan, he might tell you to “take your second star to the right and [then head] straight on until morning”. Seem a little unclear or even bizarre to you? That’s because trying to follow someone else’s path may not work for you. That’s not to say that others can’t help you along the way, or guide you – but your direction and your goals are personal. Ask yourself: “What is important to me? What do I want or need? What am I willing and able to commit to?” This post is about clearly defining your goals.

Walking the Path - One Step at a Time!

 by Kelly Whalen

“What do we know about change? Change is possible… Lasting change is best… Change is a challenge… Change is possible.” –Dr. Michael Vallis

In previous blog posts we left you contemplating your goals, and by this week, you should have your SMART goal in hand. See our last two blog posts if you’re just getting started23.

Sometimes following our goals may feel more like stumbling along in a general direction rather than following a path. Change is a challenge and there can often be a disconnect between knowing what to do, and doing it. Now we will focus on how to take the first few steps, and learn to walk on the path you’ve chosen.

Staying on the Path (or in its general area)

 by Kelly Whalen

“What do we know about change? Change is possible… Lasting change is best… Change is a challenge… Change is possible.” –Dr. Michael Vallis

In earlier blog posts about change, we discussed (a) choosing the path of change that works for your life and (b) how to create lasting change. At some point you will find your strength and feel comfortable walking the path you’ve chosen. That’s where we come in today. Chances are if you’re just beginning your change/goal/reformulation of self this year, you won’t be in this stage for quite some time. It is important to remember: changing your behavior is a process, not a single event.
