EAT:

Cooler temperatures will be upon us now that September has arrived, and comfort foods will re-appear!  If you are a lover of mac & cheese, we’ve got a festival for that here in NS! The Mac and Cheese Festival is coming up Sept.13-15th in downtown Halifax.

READ AND LEARN:

Reducing food waste and food packaging has been on my mind a lot recently.  While in London, UK in late August, I noticed an ad in the tube, for a food sharing app, called Olio.  The tag line in the ad was “When did sharing food become weirder than wasting it?”  and “Share more. Waste less.”

A newly published book delves into this issue further.  Urban Food Sharing:  Rules, Tools and Networks, by Anna R. Davies, a professor of geography at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.  The book, downloadable for free, is based on a global research project looking at food sharing initiatives.  Out of 100 urban centres studied, London, UK and New York City, were the top 2. Shout-out to Vancouver, at 10th place!  Toronto (32nd) and Montreal (45th), made it into the top 1/2 for number of initiatives in place.

Too bad they didn’t include Halifax, or Nova Scotia in their research!  Found NS is a local food sharing organization.  Check out the variety of food-sharing, waste-reducing programs they offer to businesses, individuals, and community groups!
